Cancer Type: THROAT
Diagnosis: not too shocking as i was having trouble swallowing and it was getting worse so i knew something bad was happening. always been healthy so when the family doctor thought i had allergies and i broke out in a rash from the penicillin i knew it was going to be serious. never been allergic to anything before! it was a kind of relief when i was diagnosed since i knew at least i was getting help- i could barely eat and swallow by that time.
Chemo Drugs: taxol, flouracil , usual chemo drugs plus radiation treatments
Treatment: no chemo side effects except hair loss from the taxol. no stomach upsets etc. just hair loss. radiation wasn't a big deal. disliked the pen markings on the throat for the duration of the treatments.
Quality of Life: quality of life was fine! kids were 7 and 10 at the first time and 9 and 12 the second time. was able to be a mommy and do all the usual stuff between appts. just had to take a nap and slow down sometimes but no major lifesyle upheavals. very normal family life during treatments.
Information Gathering: read a lot of books.. try the magazine COPING. very good.
General Comments: keep a good outlook on life. think positively and do whatever you can to keep busy. enjoy the simple things in life. sounds trite but it's true.
