Shared Experience Cancer Support
"It's what we all make it."
Add a cancer experience
"All the good things that you have done in your life stay on in your memory as a joy forever."
The following people/groups have made Shared Experience possible. Truly, without their generous contributions, Shared Experience would not exist.
Brain B. - who developed the original LASSO code that allowed visitors to add and search fo information from the web pages to the database. He's gone on to be quite a success at IBM!
Bruce D. at Axon.net for stepping forward and offering to host the database and site for free during the first 1 year, and for many hours of ongoing support and a deep bow of appreciation for continuing to provide the pop mail account!
Kurt Anderson and the folks at Honeycomb.net for 2 years of hosting the Filemaker database, website and email!
In memory of Chrissy Story Ribeiro: Mary R. & Bob G., who sent a check to Internic to renew the domain name "sharedexperience.org" for 2 years. They also have worked many hours helping me compile a mailing list of support groups around the country (now I just have to find someone to print out hundreds of letters, stuff them in envelopes and mail them :-)
Sheila, who reorganized and maintained the "Links to other sites" pages. Sheila was a wonderful partner of sorts to me. I would send off links to her and she'd categorize and update the site, a very time consuming process. I met her through an email she sent me volunterring to help with Shared Experience and over the next year and a half we would exchange email with jokes and encouragement as well as stuff to be done at Shared Experience. On 11/28/00 her husband Simon sent me the following email:
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that my gorgeous wife Sheila, mother of Chris, died a short while ago as a consequence of Ovarian Cancer.
Courageous to the end, Sheila passed away without pain or suffering.
Having willingly dedicated the final 21 months of her life to raise awareness of Ovarian Cancer, not to benefit herself but to ensure that women in the future would not have to endure the pain and suffering that this lethal disease inflicts on it's patients, their carers and their families and friends.
Sheila's devotion to the cause continued right to the end, with her involvement in the planning of numerous activities to raise both awareness and funds to bring about tangible improvements in diagnosis and care for ovarian cancer patients.
The work that she has done will be continued by a dedicated and growing band of supporters and I have made a pledge to Sheila that her achievements and dedication will not be lost.
I will post details of the funeral arrangements at our web site http://ovca.org/ and I have also written a tribute to her which you can read at http://ovca.org/tribute.htm
Sheila has specifically requested that no flowers be sent, instead donations can be made to The OvCa Appeal, Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria, 1 Rathdowne Street, Carlton, Victoria 3053 - Cheques should be made payable to "The OvCa Appeal - Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria"
Simon Lee
Melbourne, AustraliaGig & Holly B. - For a generous check to help me pay for my expenses staying connected to the internet!
A million thanks to Larry Ludwig and Hostasite.com for setting up and providing hosting of the new Message Exchange Area
My wife, my family and close friends, who have encouraged me and sacrificed the time I could have spent with them.
And finally, my mother, as strong and noble and gentle a creature as you will ever meet, who inspired me to create Shared Experience.
Thank you all. We have done good things.
Shared Experience is an experimental communal garden of sorts.
I bought some land (web name and space), plowed a few acres (created the web pages) and left it open (no passwords or login required) for others to plant seeds.
It has grown slowly but steadily and I have great hopes for its future.
I am patiently awaiting the day some angel arrives and pays for radio and newspaper ads, and tens of thousands of people add their experiences.
